According to news reports, almost 25,000 hectares (61,776 acres) of Russian forest are in flames across the country. Hot, dry weather is worsening fire conditions. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from May 20, 2004, shows the mixed forest and steppe landscape in south-central Russia around the city of Krasnoyarsk. The city is located at the north end of a reservoir along the Yenisey River, just southwest of image center. Scores of fires were detected by MODIS, and their locations are marked in red. Thick smoke hangs over the region at the top right of the scene, which is the southwestern edge of the Central Siberian Plateau. In addition to the high-resolution image provided above, the image is available in other resolutions.
