Developing CCD Detectors for Future X-ray Astrophysics Missions
Speaker
Eric Miller, MIT
Abstract
Future strategic X-ray missions require detectors with an unprecedented combination of frame rate, spatial resolution, bandwidth, and spectral performance. I report on ongoing work led by MIT along with collaborators at Stanford University to develop CCD detectors that meet these challenges. These development projects include (1) high-speed, low-noise, multi-readout CCD arrays paired with ASIC readout chips developed for AXIS and other future missions; (2) back-illuminated CCD detectors that are curved to match the optimal focal surface of high-spatial-resolution X-ray optics with no degradation in spectral performance; and (3) germanium CCDs that substantially increase sensitivity in the hard X-ray band compared to silicon devices, while providing excellent spectral performance compared to other technologies. I will provide an overview of each of these projects, and demonstrate that the advancement of CCD technology continues to play an important role in planning future strategic and smaller-scale missions.
