Red and black filaments of gas and dust surround a glowing white core, resembling a ring of flames. Hundreds of other stars and galaxies dot the black background.

Dusty Filaments in NGC 4696

This picture shows NGC 4696, the largest galaxy in the Centaurus Cluster. Dusty filaments surrounding the center of this huge, bright galaxy are seen in greater detail than ever before. These filaments loop and curl inward in an intriguing spiral shape, swirling around the galaxy's supermassive black hole until they are dragged into and eventually consumed by the black hole itself.
