On July 20, 1976 — the seventh anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing — the Viking 1 lander touched down safely on the western slope of Chryse Planitia (the Plains of Gold) on July 20, 1976. Viking Lander 2 settled down at Utopia Planitia on Mars. Viking 1 broke ground on Mars surface exploration, beginning an effort that continues through today.

The primary objectives of the Viking orbiters were to transport the landers to Mars, perform reconnaissance to locate and certify landing sites, act as communications relays for the landers, and to perform their own scientific investigations. The Orbiters imaged the entire surface of Mars.

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission will perform some spectacular ‘firsts’ on Mars. This image shows the Perseverance rover’s companion, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. Ingenuity will make the first powered flight on another planet. Perseverance itself will store samples of Mars in tubes (seen in the foreground). A future Mars Sample Return mission will collect these samples and return them to Earth, giving astrobiologists their first chance to examine pieces of modern-day Mars up close.

OSIRIS-REx Samples an Asteroid!

On September 24, 2023, OSIRIS-REx released its sample capsule, delivering material from the asteroid Bennu to the Utah desert. Scientists on Earth will study the material in order to learn about the formation of the Sun and planets about 4.5 billion years ago.

Draw Your Version of Extreme Life

Go on a journey to understand Earth’s extremophiles. Scientists examine harsh environments on Earth in order to identify the mechanisms that life uses to survive at the limits of habitability. This information could provide clues as to whether or not life as we know it might live on other worlds in the Universe.

In the late 1960’s, Thomas Brock and his colleagues identified bacteria living in outflow waters from the boiling hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. The finding opened a new area of astrobiology research on extremophiles.

In the late 1960’s, Thomas Brock and his colleagues identified bacteria living in outflow waters from the boiling hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. The microbe, known as Thermus aquaticus, is what is now known as a thermophile (heat loving) organism. The finding opened a new area of astrobiology research on extremophiles.

Life can thrive in terrestrial hot springs on Earth. These environments are considered 'extreme' for most life because they are very hot. The springs can also challenge life with other extreme conditions, such as acidity, alkalinity, and salinity. But in order to survive in terrestrial hot springs, most organisms need to be thermophiles, a term that means 'heat loving.'
