Resolving Galaxy Evolution Across Space, Time, and Wavelength with HWO
Kartheik Iyer, Columbia Univ., Hubble Fellow
HWO's exceptional angular resolution and wavelength coverage will enable detailed reconstruction of star formation histories (SFHs) for an unprecedented number of galaxies across cosmic time. I will present a spatiotemporal framework combining non-parametric SFH methods (Dense Basis; GP-SFH) with interpretable machine learning (Katachi) to extract both evolutionary timescales and spatial signatures of physical processes regulating galaxy growth from multiwavelength observations. In conjunction with suites of simulations like CAMELS, approaches like this can be used to disentangle and constrain the role of feedback in creating the incredible diversity of galaxies we see today. These methods can be applied to currently open questions in galaxy evolution including: (1) understanding the link between SFHs and galaxy morphology up to cosmic noon, (2) constraining star formation and quenching timescales through spatially-resolved SFHs, and (3) using star formation stochasticity to probe the role of feedback in shaping galaxies. HWO's capabilities will provide the statistical power needed to definitively test theoretical models of galaxy formation through this spatiotemporal lens.
