Message to the Cosmic Origins Community

25 March 2025

Greetings Cosmic Origins Community!

On Wednesday, March 12, the NASA Science Mission Directorate announced that the advisory committees for each of the five science divisions within the Science Mission Directorate (Astrophysics, Biological and Physical Sciences, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Science) will be merged into a single advisory committee with broad representation from across the NASA science community. The Astrophysics Division has three Program Analysis Groups (PAGs): Cosmic Origins, Exoplanets, and Physics of the Cosmos. These PAGs were reporting out through the Astrophysics Advisory Committee (APAC). The Astrophysics Division intends to continue the activities of those three PAGs, and their affiliated Science Analysis Groups (SAGs), Science Interest Groups (SIGs), and Science and Technology Interest Groups (STIGs). The Division is working on developing a new reporting structure for the PAGs so that they can continue to provide findings of analyses to the NASA Astrophysics Division Director. This will be finalized in the coming weeks and an update will be issued.

The Astrophysics Division would like to thank all those who serve, or have served, on the PAGs or their affiliated groups, providing key input into the division’s activities.

An illustration of Sun-like star HD 181327 and its surrounding debris disk. The star is at top right. It is surrounded by a far larger debris disk that forms an incomplete ellpitical path and is cut off at right. There’s a huge cavity between the star and the disk. The debris disk is shown in shades of light gray. Toward the top and left, there are finer, more discrete points in a range of sizes. The disk appears hazier and smokier at the bottom. The star is bright white at center, with a hazy blue region around it. The background of space is black. The label Artist's Concept appears at lower left.
