Amuay Refinery, Venezuela

 

Located on the Paraguana Peninsula in northwest Venezuela, the Amuayrefinery is one of the world’s largest and is capable of processing upto 630,000 barrels per day of crude oil. Venezuela supplies about 13 percent of the daily oil and oil products imported into the United State, muchof which is gasoline.

In this false-color scene, dark blue is open water, greenish-brown shows vegetation land surface, and light bluish-white areas show human developments. This image was acquired on May 31, 2001, by the Advanced SpaceborneThermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terrasatellite. With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermalinfrared wavelength region, and its high spatial resolution of 15 to 90meters (about 50 to 300 feet), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor thechanging surface of our planet.
