South of Lake Tahoe, the Angora Fire continued to threaten residences, recreation areas, and cultural resources in California on June 27, 2007. According to the morning report from the National Interagency Fire Center, the 3,100-acre fire was 44 percent contained. This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on June 26 at 2:35 p.m. local time. The area in which the sensor detected actively burning fire is outlined in red. Smoke drifts northeast.

The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the region in additional resolution and formats.
