A modest plume of dust blew off the eastern coast of Africa over the Gulf of Aden on August 13, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the dust appears as a beige tendril heading toward the northeast, tapering to a narrow point over the gulf. The plume originates near Somalia’s border with Djibouti. Clouds appear around the fringes of the image, perhaps related to the same weather system that stirred up the dust.
