Dust plumes blew off the coasts of Senegal, Mauritania, and Western Sahara on September 28, 2008. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, a larger, translucent plume of dust surrounds an inner, thicker plume. The source points for this storm are not apparent in this image, but the dust may have arisen from the sand seas that cover much of Mauritania.
