On August 10, 2008, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of blowing dust over northern Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. The region’s dry terrain is a mixture of rugged mountains and sandy or rocky deserts. These landscapes appear tan and brown, while the dust storm is paler. Vegetation along rivers and streams is dull green. The large version of the image shows a wider area to the south; a second dust storm is visible in southern Afghanistan and Pakistan.
