The Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat emitted a plume of ash and/or steam on June 10, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the volcanic island sports a hotspot, outlined in red, where the satellite sensor detected ground surface temperatures much warmer than the surroundings. The thin volcanic plume blows away from the volcano, westward over the Caribbean.
