Scores of fires were burning in northeastern India, Myanmar, and Thailand on February 27, 2006. Agricultural fires commonly occur here in the late winter (Northern Hemisphere), as farmers clear fields to prepare for new planting. Although agricultural fires are not necessarily immediately hazardous, such large-scale burning can have a strong impact on weather, climate, human health, and natural resources.
