While fires in Greece appeared to have quieted down at the end of August 2007, fires continued to burn in Albania and Montenegro. This image of the Balkans was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 29, 2007. Places where the sensor detected actively burning fires are marked in red. Smoke spreads eastward over Serbia. Fire activity has been occurring off and on in the Balkans since July.

You can download a 250-meter-resolution KMZ file of fires in and around Albania suitable for use with Google Earth.
