Spring snowmelt brought widespread flooding to southern Siberia and northern Kazakhstan in May 2006. The top image, acquired on May 10, 2006, shows flooding along the Erits (Irtysh) River in Kazakhstan, near the Russian border. On April 24, lower image, the river was still at the low flow levels typical of winter. That this section of the river floods frequently can be seen in the orange, silt-covered flood plain surrounding the river in the lower image. In this false-color image, bare soil is tan and pink, while plant-covered land is green. Clouds are pale blue, and water is darker blue.
