An arc of haze hundreds of kilometers long hung over the Bay of Bengal on November 9, 2011. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite took this picture the same day.
For days, thick haze hugged the southern slopes of the Himalaya, and blew toward the southeast over the Bay of Bengal. Some of the haze visible in this image likely results from agricultural fires in northwestern India. Other contributors to the haze might include urban and industrial pollution, and dust.
