At 16:40 UT on September 3, 2003, the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) collected this view of Hurricane Fabian as it was passing overthe Sargasso Sea. Bermuda and its surroundingcoral bank is visible toward the upper left of this image as a small aquamarine ellipse. Fabian currently appears to be heading toward Bermuda, although some forecasts suggest the hurricane will veer more northward and bypass Bermuda as it moves toward the North Atlantic.
On Sept. 4, Hurricane Fabian was situated 570 miles (920 km) south of Bermuda, and was moving toward the northwest at roughly 8 mph. The stormed packed sustained winds of 120 mph (195 km/h), but its intensity was expected to fluctuate over the next 24 hours.
