A winter storm struck eastern New England on February 17, 2013, bringing high winds and several inches of snow, Reuters reported. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image the same day.
Storm clouds spanned several hundred kilometers over the Atlantic Ocean and eastern New England. Although clouds were thick over Maine, they thinned in the south, only extending as far south as New York. Reuters reported that the storm largely spared New York City and Connecticut—areas still digging out from an earlier storm. Cooler temperatures associated with this new storm system meant that snow would be less likely to cling to tree branches and subsequently down power lines.
