Super Typhoon Vongfong grew to a category 5 storm on October 7, 2014, making it the fourth storm of the year to reach category 5 status. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image of Vongfong at 0215 Universal Time on October 8, 2014, as the storm churned across the Philippine Sea.

Large, well-defined eyewall features are not uncommon in storms of this magnitude, according to research meteorologist Scott Braun of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
