February 5, 2002

About 400 miles south of Santiago, Chile, the dense smoke from numerous forest fires stretched out over the Pacific Ocean on February 5, 2002. This true-color MODIS image shows fires indicated with red dots (boxes in the high-resolution imagery) located near the city of Temuco. The fires were burning near several national parks and nature reserves in an area of the Chilean Andes where tourism is very popular. To the southeast of the fires, the vegetation along the banks of the R¡o Negro in Argentina stands out in dark green.
