April is Community College Month

Hurrah for Community Colleges!

Learn about two Science Activation projects that focus on community college audiences. For activities and resources for Community Colleges, visit our Back to School page here.

Smoky Mountains STEM Collaborative

The Smoky Mountains STEM Collaborative, which engage the region's public schools, tribal schools, community colleges, and universities in a cohesive, learner-centered STEM ecosystem that leverages Subject Matter Experts and science centers to achieve NASA's mission to help learners of all ages "do" science in their own communities.

Southwestern Community College student Stella Walborn demonstrates one instance of how river cane was used to craft blowguns by the Cherokee during the college's Cultural Fusion Festival. Stella is currently assisting the Smoky Mountains STEM Collaborative in developing a virtual tour of river cane for the Infiniscope platform with help from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources initiative.

NASA Community College Network

The NASA Community College Network (NCCN), currently in its 2nd year, which brings NASA science subject matter experts (SMDs) and NASA science resources into the classrooms of the nation’s community college system. NCCN brokers direct partnerships between NASA science SMEs and community college instructors based on needs and expertise. NCCN provides a set of current resources to be used by the SMEs in classroom interactions, or directly by the instructors, that is audience appropriate and “ready to go.” And NCCN provides professional development and training, both for the community college instructors to support their knowledge base of new NASA science or research topics, and for the NASA SMEs on how best interact with this audience.
