Program Scientist and Manager
Dr. Argyro Kavvada is the program scientist and manager for the Integrated Modeling Virtual Institute (IMVI), which integrates NASA’s major Earth system models into a unified framework to maintain and enhance NASA’s world-leading role in producing and providing advanced analyses, predictions, and projections of the Earth system. She also leads development of NASA’s Earth Science Modeling Strategy, which involves a strong, sustained commitment to observation driven modeling to advance scientific knowledge and translate it into actionable information across the variety of time and space scales needed to support NASA’s core mission.
Argyro also serves as a program manager for Atmospheric Composition and Responsive Science Research, and the program applications lead for NASA Earth System Explorers, the NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) and Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) initiatives. She has led multi-agency and international efforts to improve the quality, transparency, and accessibility of Earth science information and its use for societal benefit, including having served as the program manager for the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center, a multi-agency effort designed to improve the quality, transparency, and accessibility of emissions information.
Argyro earned her bachelor’s degree in physics at the Johns Hopkins University, her masters degree in applied mathematics and statistics at Georgetown University, and her doctorate degree in atmospheric science at the University of Maryland, College Park. She enjoys outreach about all forms of science and technology, and in addition to public speaking, she serves as a mentor in professional networks within the science community.
