A dust devil whirled by in the distance as one of the cameras on NASA's Perseverance captured the Mars rover coring a sample near the rim of Jezero Crater on April 29, 2025, the 1,490th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
The 12 images that make up this animation were taken approximately one minute apart by the rover's front right hazard-avoidance camera. The dust devil is in the upper right of the frame.
The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA's Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed for the agency by Caltech in Pasadena, California, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.
