Artist's rendering of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) observing its Centaur upper rocket stage on route to impact the lunar surface in 2009. LCROSS launched on the same rocket with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) with the objective of confirming the presence or absence of water ice in a permanently shadowed crater at the Moon's South Pole.
