After the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28,1986, seven craters on the eastern rim of the Apollo basin were named after the crew members: Gregory Jarvis, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnick, Dick Scobee, and Michael Smith.
The Apollo basin is 524 km across within the larger South Pole Aitken Basin.
