The Bodele Depression is one of the largest sources of airborne dust in the world. Here a bright swath of dust stretches over the upper right part of a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on February 18, 2004. At bottom left, the wetlands surrounding what remains of Lake Chad are speckled with encroaching sand dunes.
