A TDAMM Mission Concept Offered by the X-ray Timing Science Analysis Group: the Dynamic Extreme Universe in X-rays (DEUS-X) Machine

Abstract

"X-ray timing" is about so much more than lightcurves. It's about watching, in real time, the physics of dynamic, often explosive, phenomena play out before us, via time-dependent spectroscopy on scales spanning microseconds to years. Realizing this objective requires capabilities that include wide-field surveys for X-ray transients as well as rapid multiwavelength follow-up of both the survey detections and multi-messenger alerts from elsewhere. We describe the most compelling science questions that are addressed by high-throughput, high-cadence X-ray spectroscopy and responsive transient follow-up — from exoplanet-hosting flaring stars to star-devouring supermassive black holes.  We also describe the DEUS-X mission concept, one that envisions a fleet of spacecraft in two complementary configurations: one designed for uninterrupted coverage of the full sky outside of a Sun-avoidance cone, and the other for agile and highly efficient multiwavelength observations of new and known sources.
