Two images of Messier 43. The left image was taken by an amateur astronomer and the right image by Hubble. Both images feature a cloud with a bright-white core surrounded by pinkish-red gas. To the left of the bright core, a large, arching pillar of dark dust extends from the bottom of the image toward the top of the image and curves toward the left. The Hubble image reveals more details, and colors in the clouds, along with much finer details in the dark cloud which is much more pronounced in the Hubble image.

Messier 43: Amateur vs Hubble Image

Messier 43 is a neighbor to Messier 42, the Orion Nebula, and is located 1,600 light-years away. The amateur image was taken with an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope using a 0.63x focal reducer and a DSLR Camera.
