Caldwell 58: Amateur Image vs. Hubble Image
Caldwell 58 (C58), also called Caroline’s Cluster in honor of astronomer Caroline Herschel, is an open cluster of stars some 3,700 light-years away in the constellation Canis Major. The left image was taken with an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope using a 0.63x focal reducer and a DSLR Camera. The center image was taken by the ground-based Digitized Sky Survey and presents a wider field of view of the cluster. The right image, taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, zooms in on the cluster to reveal some of its spectacular stars.
