Dr. Daniel Evans
Daniel Evans is the lead for NASA’s Astrophysics Research program, which spans numerous NASA field centers as well as the broader US community. He also serves as the Program Scientist for the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), the Lynx mission concept study, and the Deputy Program Scientist for the Athena mission.
Currently, Dr. Evans is on assignment to the White House Office of Management and Budget as the Program Examiner for NASA Low Earth Orbit and Spaceflight Operations. He is responsible for the budget development and execution of a $5 billion portfolio of NASA programs, including the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, the International Space Station, Commercial Crew and Cargo, and the development of vibrant, U.S.-led commercial space economy in low-Earth Orbit.
Prior to joining NASA in 2015, Dr. Evans served as a Program Director in NSF's Division of Astronomical Sciences. Two of his major roles included serving as Program Director for the International Gemini Observatory and Head of the NSF Astronomy Grants Programs.
Dr. Evans’s research interests include the astrophysics of supermassive black holes, galaxy evolution, and relativistic jets.
Dr. Evans has appeared on numerous television networks to discuss his work, including the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and the BBC. Most recently, Dr. Evans was named as the Smithsonian Institution's “Future is Here” lecturer.
Dr. Evans held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Bristol.
