Abstract

The Office of the Chief Science Data Officer of the Science Mission Directorate enables groundbreaking discoveries by expanding the availability and utility of NASA scientific data.  This includes developing policies that support open science, modernizing data and compute for scientific discoveries, and advancing scientific discovery through innovative applications and partnerships in data science. In this talk, we will provide an update on the activities of the OCSDO and SMD.  This includes the development of policy related to artificial intelligence and open science, new computing capabilities available as part of the Science Cloud and High-End Computing portfolio, and the development of foundation models to support scientific discovery. This will include some considerations and opportunities on the use of artificial intelligence.

Topics Covered

  • Open science as shared research products and processes with security, privacy, reproducibility, and equity
  • The 2023 Year of Open Science and its federal open-science goals
  • NASA's implementation model: policy and governance, core services, incentives, and community
  • SPD-41a requirements for open publications, research data, software, mission data, and meetings
  • Science Explorer, Science Discovery Engine, and cross-division data and computing infrastructure
  • TOPS, Open Science 101 modules, and the NASA Open Science Certificate

Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.
