Live Coverage for NASA ISRO’s NISAR Launch Begins

A wide, low-angle shot of a rocket on a launch pad at dusk. The white rocket is positioned next to its mobile service tower and is surrounded by four tall, illuminated metal lattice towers. The sky behind is a deep blue with clouds, transitioning to a warm yellow and orange glow from the setting sun on the right horizon.

Live launch coverage is underway from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California of the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) mission. A collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Earth satellite is slated to launch at 8:10 a.m. EDT (5:40 p.m. IST), Wednesday, July 30, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India’s southeastern coast aboard an ISRO Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket.

The satellite will provide high-resolution data enabling scientists to comprehensively monitor the planet’s land, ice, and infrastructure surfaces like never before, building a detailed record of how they change over time. The information NISAR provides will help decision-makers, communities, and scientists monitor major infrastructure and agricultural fields, refine understanding of natural hazards such as landslides and earthquakes, and help teams prepare for and respond to disasters like hurricanes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. The satellite will also provide key global observations of changes to ice sheets, glaciers, and permafrost, as well as forests and wetlands.
