Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE)

The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment, SAGE, is a series of instruments designed by NASA to observe stratospheric ozone, aerosols, and water vapor from space. In the mid-1980s, scientists realized there was a problem with Earth’s protective coat of ozone...it was thinning. The SAGE family of instruments was pivotal in making accurate measurements of the amount of ozone loss in Earth’s atmosphere and helped leaders around the world institute an international treaty banning products containing harmful chemicals that destroy stratospheric ozone. SAGE is a key part of NASA’s mission to provide crucial, long-term measurements that will help humans better understand and care for Earth’s atmosphere.

The 3rd Cohort of SAGE III/ISS Science Team Selections

The 3rd cohort of SAGE III/ISS Science Team selections have been made from proposals submitted to the NASA ROSES 2023 A.30 solicitation. Total funding of the 10 investigations selected is approximately $4.8 million, over a period of three years, to begin by mid-year 2024. The range of topics touch all the current occultation science products […]

SAGE III Sees Tonga Aerosols, Water Vapor Months After Eruption

In July, purple and pink hues painted the Antarctica and New Zealand skies — likely the result of atmospheric particles called aerosols that belched into the stratosphere in January during the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano. Aerosols from eruptions, and extreme wildfires, can remain in the stratosphere for months to years traveling around the […]
