November 16, 2003

Streaks of white dust from the Bodele Depression around Lake Chad (southwest of center) hang in the skies across the center of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on November 16, 2003. In the bottom part of the image, a generous sprinkling of fires (marked with red dots) was detected across the Sahel and savanna regions of central Africa just south of the Sahara Desert.
