East Africa

This image shows the East African nations of Ethiopia, Eritrea, andSomalia, as well as portions of Kenya, Sudan, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia.Dominating the scene are the green Ethiopian Highlands. With altitudes ashigh as 4,620 meters (15,157 feet), the highlands pull moisture from thearid air, resulting in relatively lush vegetation. In fact, coffee—oneof the world’s most prized crops—originated here. To the north(above) the highlands is Eritrea, which became independent in 1993. East(right) of Ethiopia is Somalia, jutting out into the Indian Ocean.
