Fires in Magadan Region, Russia’s Kolyma Mountains
August 16, 2009

Multiple large forest fires were burning in the Magadan province of northeastern Russia in mid-August 2009. This image of the area near the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 16. Fires at the left edge of the scene are billowing thick clouds of smoke. The smoke flows east and pools in a mass near the right edge.
