On April 26, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over the island of Tasmania, south of Australia, and captured this image, which showed numerous fires (marked in red) burning. Several of the fires are accompanied by long smoke plumes, which stretch generally westward.
