February is typically the dry season in northern Venezuela, but not in 2005. Torrential rains brought deadly floods to the country’s coastal provinces, including the capital, Caracas. In this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, blue smudges along the coast show flooding in the Falcon Province. In these false-color images, clear water is black, while muddy water is blue. Clouds are white and pale blue, and vegetation is green. When this image was acquired by NASA’s Terra satellite on February 14, up to 25,000 people had been affected by floods throughout the country.
