Flooding in Southern Luzon
After making landfall on Samar on December 6, 2014, slow-moving typhoon Hagupit tracked northwest toward the island of Luzon in The Philippines. According to measurements made by the Microwave Imager on the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), the storm dropped upwards of 200 millimeters (8 inches) of rain over much of southern Luzon’s Bicol region.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite observed floodwaters in southern Luzon on December 9, 2014. For comparison, the upper image shows the same area on December 2, 2014. Turn on the image comparison tool to slide between the two images. These false-color images use a combination of visible and infrared light to make it easier to distinguish between water and land. River water appears navy blue to black and vegetation is bright green. Clouds are pale blue-green and cast shadows.
