Gulf Port, Mississippi, was a major point of entry for goods entering the United States, but more than a week after Hurricane Katrina came ashore over the city, the port remains closed. This Ikonos image, taken on September 2, 2005, shows why the port has not re-opened. The port has been scoured, and the cargo containers that would normally line its lots havae been tossed farther inland by the storm’s powerful surge. In the center of the image, a large cargo ship has been lifted out of the water and now rests on the dirt-covered asphalt of the pier. A warehouse along the dock seems to have survived without obvious damage from this perspective, though debris surrounds it.
