On Sunday, July 28, 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite detected active fire on several fronts on the McNalley Fire in Sequoia National Forest in southern California. MODIS can detect fires even through a thick haze of smoke, such as that seen in this image, which makes it a valuable addition to traditional air plane reconnaissance.
