Smoke Over Northern Europe and the Atlantic

Spring agricultural fires were burning in western Russia throughout the end of April and early May 2006. The smoke from these fires has been spreading northward over Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and out over the Barents Sea. This image from April 30, 2006, was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. Smoke casts a gray pall over the blue waters of the ocean.
