Super Typhoon Dianmu

Instruments:
Super Typhoon Dianmu
June 20, 2004

The MODIS instrument onboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Typhoon Dianmu (Mother of Lightning in Chinese) on June 20 at 2:25 UTC. At the time this image was taken Dianmu was packing sustained winds of 92 mph with higher gusts to 115 mph and was moving north-northeast at 15 mph.

The day after this image was captured, Dianmu weakened into a tropical storm and moved up the west coast of Japan. Initial news reports say that the storm killed three people, damaged homes, and halted transportation. The storm is expected to continue to move north across Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido, and into the Sea of Okhotsk.

The image is available in multiple resolutions.
