Typhoon Kirogi was a small but well-organized and powerful storm system when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image at 10:40 a.m. local time, on October 12, 2005. At the time of this MODIS observation, Kirogi was 500 kilometers (300 miles) from Okinawa. It was travelling roughly southwest, but had been wandering more or less in the same place for two days and posed no threat to any populated areas. At this time, Typhoon Kirogi had sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour (120 miles per hour) near the storm’s center.
