In southwestern Australia, firefighters were working to slow the spread of several large wildfires on the outskirts of Perth in the third week of January 2005. This image of the fires was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on January 18. At image left, on the coast, is the city of Perth, and large, smoky fires are burning to the east of the city. The active parts of the fire that MODIS detected are outlined in red.
