This illustration depicts NASA's Juno spacecraft in orbit above Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
A double line of light gray breaks up a starfield dotted with points of light, running from left to right about a third of the way down this image. The image is looking through Jupiter’s main ring. The star field’s background is darker at the top and bottom of the image, with a gradient of gray from lighter to darker running below the double line.

Juno Orbits

Juno's orbits around Jupiter are counted in “perijoves” — the point in each trip around the planet when the spacecraft is closest to Jupiter. In contrast, an “apojove” is the point in its orbit when Juno is farthest from Jupiter. When the spacecraft arrived on July 4, 2016 (PDT) and entered the grasp of the giant planet, the mission team began marking perijoves with that first close encounter — “Perijove 0.”
After that, the spacecraft reached “Apojove 0” on July 31 – when, for the first time, it crossed that most distant point in its circuit around Jupiter, about 5 million miles away from the planet (8.1 million kilometers). Then Juno headed back, pulled in by Jupiter’s gravity, and on Aug. 27, 2016, passed about 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) above the planet’s swirling cloud tops — marking “Perijove 1.”

During most of its mission, NASA’s Juno spacecraft maintained 53-day polar orbits around Jupiter. The orbits shrank after flybys of the moons Ganymede, Europa, and Io, altered by their gravitational influences, culminating in 33-day orbits as of February 2024 At its closest, Juno passed within 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) of Jupiter’s cloud tops.
