Webb Flipbook

Create a Webb Deployment Flip Book
Webb is the largest telescope ever placed in space; 100 times more powerful than Hubble. So big it had to fold origami-style to fit in the rocket and unfolded like a "Transformer" in space.

Webb Deployment Flipbook

For the James Webb Space Telescope to fit into a rocket, it had to be folded up. After launch, Webb deployed during its roughly 30-day, million-mile journey out to the second Lagrange point (L2). This 48-frame flipbook highlights how Webb deployed or unfolded like a transformer once in space. It can be made at home using paper and a binder clip. As you quickly flip through the frames, you can see an animation of how Webb will deploy in space!

Make your own Webb Deployment Flipbook. Piece the images together, flip them quickly, and watch Webb blossom!

“How To” Video

Post-Launch Deployment

After launch, the telescope deployed on its 30-day, million-mile journey out to the second Lagrange point (L2). This video shows the deployment procedure, timeline, and location of the satellite during deployment. More about the telescope's final orbit around L2.
