NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Data and Computing Architecture study will investigate how a coordinated cloud-High End Computing (HEC) infrastructure can meet the data and computing needs of SMD, enable efficiencies, and support SMD’s transition to Open-Source Science.
The goals of this study are to:
- Identify scientific data and computing capabilities and architectures that enable Open Science, improve access to advanced computing and analytic services, allow open scientific collaboration, manage cybersecurity risks, and balance cost.
- Identify opportunities that will ensure long-term evolution and sustainability of an SMD-wide data and computing infrastructure to enable Open-Source Science.
The Data and Computing Architecture Study will solicit input from a broad and diverse set of NASA teams, industry partners, Open Science experts, and stakeholders across a spectrum of the science mission, research and data and computing systems community. The study will be conducted in an open manner and will include public workshops and broad outreach efforts.
As part of this study, a Request for Information (RFI) has been released on NSPIRES. Responses to the RFI must be submitted by February 21, 2023. Watch the recording of the January 26, 2023 SMD Townhall to address questions about the RFI.
