NASA's Mars rover Curiosity took 12 images in Gale Crater using its mast-mounted Left Navigation Camera (Navcam) to create this mosaic. The seam-corrected mosaic provides a polar stereographic projection panorama of the Martian surface with 0 degrees azimuth (measured clockwise from north) at the top of the image. Curiosity took the images on September 16, 2012, Sol 40 of the Mars Science Laboratory mission at drive 916, site number 4. The local mean solar time for the image exposures was 3 PM. Each Navcam image has a 45-degree field of view. CREDIT: NASA/JPL-Caltech
