GLOBE Goes to Camp: A Nature to Your Doorstep Science Investigation

Camp programs provide enriching, experiential education opportunities for children and communities across the Nation, and camp professionals are the incredible people engaging youth in these many teachable moments.

The GLOBE Goes to Camp project recently attended the American Camp Association conference in early February 2022 and presented: “Nature to Your Doorstep” session. This presentation and the corresponding activity stations demonstrated how camp directors and facilitators could incorporate GLOBE citizen science investigations into their ongoing exploration of nature, while simultaneously fostering environmental stewardship and scientific literacy.

During the session, led by Tina Harte from NASA Langley Research Center, 25 participants were completely engaged in activities exploring the various ways they could incorporate GLOBE and NASA into their camp programming. Following the presentation, eight new camps applied to become part of the GLOBE Goes to Camp project, and conversations with the remaining participants are ongoing.

Many thanks to the three GLOBE Goes to Camp camp directors who helped facilitate the session: Amy Ellisor from Camp Discovery in Blythewood, SC; Krista White from Camp Granite Lake in Golden, CO; and Barbara McCullough-Jones from Camp Wa-Ri-Ki in Washougal, WA.
